ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Don Jagoe

Don is a Newport-based fine art photographer with strong ties to Paris, who finds rich, compelling subject matter in both locations. After years of film-based photography—primarily black and white—with the attendant darkroom chemistry, he has fully embraced digital capture, processing and archival printing with pigment inksets. It is his firm belief that these technologies, used appropriately, offer the photographer far greater latitude and control in presenting the image seen. In general, his desire is to capture the play of light in our world and represent it to the viewer in a way which captures both its luminosity and subtlety. Additionally, he seeks life’s ironies and special moments, which provide a unique artistic opportunity only possible in the photographic medium.

Local affiliations include currently serving as the President of the Newport Art Museum PhotoGuild, as a member of the Silver Circle photographic group, and as a Trustee and Governance Committee Chair for the Newport Art Museum.  He is a past President of the Castle Hill Neighborhood Association, the New England Chapter of the Marine Technology Society and served on the Board of the Armed Forces YMCA.  A retired Naval Officer, Don is presently Vice President and Division Manager of Science Applications International Corporation in Newport. He works with disadvantaged children in Fall River, MA in the Express Yourself program, utilizing photography as a means for creative self expression; that work should extend into Newport County this year.

Don’s work has been shown at the DeBlois Gallery, the Jessica Hagen Fine Art Gallery, has twice been selected in Juried shows at the South County Art Association, at the Newport Art Museum  Member’s Show and during three years of Wet Paint.

.In 1990 in conversation with a potter about my interest in making pots, Ann W. Baker, who became a mentor, gave me a kick wheel, some clay she no longer wanted and some glaze recipes. After a few years of learning to throw pots in my spare time, I decided to pursue pottery in a serious fashion.

My interest in pots seems to be confined to the clay surfaces rather than glazes and the color obtained by glazes. As I look through my scrapbook of pots made by others that please me, I note that most of those are primitive constructions with interesting surface textures and wonderful dark clay bodies.

Since 1994 I have been a full-time potter. I have had shows at my studio, shown with the A.W. Baker Gallery in Westport and have had numerous shows at the DeBlois Gallery in Newport. My large garden pots have been featured in the gardens at the Mall at Chestnut Hill.

I draw my perception on the world of nature and modern society. Basically I exaggerate about what’s going; it’s pretty awesome.
