Judi Israel / Susan Perrine
/ Trish Hurley
sculpture / fiber arts / paintings
Judi Israel, a ceramic sculptor, casts hares as
the artists’ models in well known, familiar paintings and sculpture. A
Barrington artist, this was Israel’s second show at the DeBlois Gallery. Trish
Hurley, who teaches at CCRI and the Newport Art Museum, paints atmospheric
landscapes inspired by her love for the outdoors and the ever changing weather
of New England. Susan Perrine is a fiber artist who lived in Jamestown for 25
years and now makes her home in Woolrich, Maine. Perrine showed quilts and large
fabric images in addition to two Bogg coats, light weight garments made from
local sources.

Artist's Statement
Judi Israel
My work reflects my love
of nature and my constant quest for humor in the world around me. I
look for the whimsy and even the silliness in my surroundings. I
hope that my art will make people smile.
The idea for the first
hare series came to me in the wee hours of the night. I had just
finished several outdoor garden hares. They were well received and I
had fun making them. Summer was over, but the need to create hares
was still with me. Using them as a tribute to art icons just seemed
like a humorous way of paying homage to some of my favorite works of art.
Then the hares seemed to take a life of their own. Oh so many
artists!
This second series
of hares continues my nighttime inspirations. There were so many
artists that I still wanted to use as my muses. I guess imitation is
the sincerest form of flattery. I think the artists wouldn’t be
offended as we all seem to borrow from those before us.
Clay purist that I am, I
found myself constantly testing the limits of the clay, trying to get it
to do things it just wouldn’t. Eventually, I just had to go beyond
the clay as the medium incorporating wire and wood to better capture the
spirit of some the artists.

About Susan Perrine
Susan Perrine has been a weaver from
the time she graduated high school. Throughout her life she has produced
work for individual artists and large manufacturers. Susan designs
and creates hand woven clothing with inspiration from ancient styles. The
upcoming DeBlois show, ‘Intersections’ will include Susan’s hand woven
Bogg coats. These light weight garments, incorporating fiber from
local sources, were originally designed to generate as little waste as
possible. Quilts and recent work will also be featured. Currently
Susan lives in Woolwich, Maine, though she was a resident of Jamestown, RI
from 1976-2001. Susan initiated and organized Banners Over Bath in
2005, which is now an annual outdoor art exhibition. It provides an
opportunity for artists to connect to their community.

There are
always bits of a memory that remain unclear. We remember certain
details more than others.
This
artwork that I have chosen to share, is my reflection into the past.
Enjoy…
