Kathy Morton

Painter, Printmaker, Photographer

Nature gives us the best of perfection in a very imperfect way.  My art provides me with a way to record what I love most about the natural world. Creating images takes me where I find peace in my world.

Through my travels, I am inspired by nature and the natural changes which time and weather have created.   I am fascinated with textures and colors as they interact with light.  No matter where I am, I find magic in the similarities as well as the vast differences our natural world provides.

Most of my work is done through experimentation and exploration of many mediums either alone or in combination.  Once I have an idea, I try to express it many different ways using a variety of materials until it begins to take on what I want to express.

Photography, always a tool for travel, has taken on new interest with the unique techniques provided by software, printers and a variety of papers.

Printmaking has a special appeal for me as it is a non-direct process with some compelling results.  Monotypes using printer’s ink can become detailed or simple, one-of-a-kind image.

Encaustic painting, one of the most ancient art forms, provides many surprises as it is applied to any porous surface.  The pure pigments added to a bees wax mixture have rich colors which can be mixed or used alone.  The wax provides the surface and the glue of many projects.  It can be polished to a lustrous sheen, cut into, built up or used to create texture.

Oils provides the color and texture for an interesting still life or a more challenging plein aire landscape.

Mixed Media allows me to convey my interpretation of nature by using dramatic colors, combining textural elements often found at a sight of interest and added to other art forms.
