Our
July exhibit features the work of wood sculptor Chuck January, as
well as fine-art painters Mandy Howe, Meredith LeBlanc, and
Zoryana Tershovsha. The works on display illustrate how each
artist interacts with the natural world in a kind of conversation,
rendering up joy, beauty, and admiration.
Fine-art
painter Mandy Howe says that she spends time outside, studying the
natural world, from up close or far away, becoming fascinated with
a particular place, then focusing intently on how to paint what
she sees there. Her visceral response to specific places – such as
the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, Woods-Estabrook Preserve, Oakland
Forest, local hay fields, and more – leads to a series of
paintings that explore the colors, marks, seasonal shifts and
energies of these places and what lives and grows there. Thanks to
the Aquidneck Land Trust, these places will be protected and
conserved for us and our children’s children.
Wood sculptor
Chuck January tells us that his life is the melding of artist and
artisan; he was born to a father who was a very talented artist
and comes from ancestors who were very accomplished woodworkers.
"This is not what I do but rather who I am. Creativity has always
taken center stage in my life along with my love of the natural
world. I source my materials from wood piles that would otherwise
be destined for decay or burning, then allow my vision and
intuition to take over to create one-of-a-kind pieces."
Fine-art
painter and DeBlois member Meredith LeBlanc is an artist's
daughter who grew up encouraged to explore creativity in all its
forms. "After a 34-year break from the easel, I returned to
painting in 2019, inspired by a dear friend. Since then, oil
painting has become both a creative outlet and a soulful
retreat—rich with texture, color, and emotion. This journey has
helped me let go of perfection and embrace a more natural flow.
I’m inspired by nature, flowers, bold color, and my pug Scarlet.
Painting brings me joy, and I hope to share that joy through my
work."
Fine-arts
painter Zoryana Tershovsha came to America during the Ukrainian
War, bringing with her not only memories, but a gift—an ability to
create beauty. Her paintings are not just flowers; they are a
source of joy and inspiration. The kindness and support of the
people around her inspire her to make sure that her flowers
continue to bloom, bringing light, which will conquer darkness.
Events of her life and shared stories inspire Zoryana to use
vibrant oil colors daily, and at this point she is exploring
impressionist styles.
