Shawndavid Berry

I strive to make connections between movement and flow in my work. Everything has a way of melding into another. Working in both sculpture and fine work I hope to present these concepts.
90% of the material I sculpt is harvested, processed, treated and dried myself. The color is naturally enhanced through my drying and treatment process. I do not use stain and the only film finish I use is a rubbing process of wax, shellac and lacquer. I am very fortunate to work in a field where I have clients who donate to my drying racks. Through a deep understanding of my material, to a cellular level, I work with and within the grain and growth rings to bring as much flowing movement. These are meditation pieces, they are meant to be touched and can help clear one's mind.

Izabella Casselman

Izabella Gordon Casselman has always been a mark maker; from the time she drew in the dirt with a stick at the age of 6.  Along the way she became a storyteller using all types of materials which made her more or less a mixed media artist. She believes that the end product, the images she produces, allows her to try to understand the world she inhabits, both conscious and unconscious. Her myriad of thoughts lead her to believe that people are all unique and one can only try to understand the human condition. The hard part of storytelling is the realization that there can be many, many endings and sometimes no endings.

If I were to check out the American life, I would ask, What happened to compassion, empathy, caretaking? Maybe it was turned over to paid institutions, Maybe in large, extended families a duty to compassion still exists. I hope it will make a comeback.

I spend time outside, looking at nature, up close, or far away. I become fascinated with a particular place and then intensely focused on how to paint what I see there. I research the ecology of a landscape and look at other artist’s paintings of it in art history. My visceral response to a particular place leads to a series of paintings that explore the colors, spaces, marks, and energy of that place. It is really just an ongoing exploration of paint and painting, anchored in the natural world.

Painting is a journey into myself and a learning experience. Feeling the sensuousness of the paint itself, the vibration of blending the colors, and the emotion that arises as I work. It has lessened my personal need for perfection and to let my flow be more natural. As the daughter of an artist, I was fortunate to have the encouragement to explore being creative in any way possible. My goal as an artist is to share what brings me joy and happiness. Painting has also become a necessity in my life, a way to renew my brain and my spirit.

Fran Leyenberger

Originally from Newport, RI, I've been working in clay for over 50 years. My styles range from art deco, Japanese americanized raku, tableware and now architecturally inspired porcelain and lighting. In 2019 I began working in porcelain after 50 years concentrating in stoneware and raku clay. It's a totally different material for me and has led me in a completely new direction with my work. The architecture surrounding me in Newport, RI and Bucks County, PA are the inspiration highlighted in my new lighting work.

I explore moments that appear in a split second using my camera. To capture this moment, I must be part of the moment so that I can feel what is happening and then click, I have it in my camera. While I prefer people , the moment could be an object like a flower.

Art gives both the artist and the viewer the ability to see forward with either sadness or joy by exploring materials and colors that have special meaning. Nature is a theme I use frequently to express my feelings. In these pieces I see time passing to quickly, summer too soon turns to fall. Encaustic, a natural preservative allows for the use of the old in the new. In the pieces, THE REMAINS OF SUMMER 1&2, I have stained my paper with copper and rusted iron to color the background and used encaustic to adhere the remains remains.

Karen Nash

I love rummaging through my trove of "art parts" to see what talks to me and to other art parts. Then comes the challenge of designing the order of assembly, to say nothing of the method(s) - mechanical fastening (nails, screws, rivets), adhesives (so many kinds!), soldering or welding - and last but never least, finishing (polishing, painting, staining). Then there's the crucial post-assembly period of inhabiting the same space with the piece so anything out of kilter will prompt a tweak. Is anything ever finished? Probably not.

Michael O'Donnell

When I work with realism, I often use images of musical instruments, as I have in Block Island Sounds, or references to pieces of music such as Pirate Jenny, which is a song from The Three Penny Opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht and sung by Lotte Lenya. This practice allows me to maintain a spiritual connection to my teacher, the late Henry Schwartz, a noted Boston Expressionist, who often used musical themes in his work.

Pigeons are such a common sight in cities that they’re often ignored. I grew interested in them many years ago but haven’t made any recent paintings or drawings. These three new pieces represent a fresh engagement for me with the birds: the iconic shape combined with the variations in their colours. I know that they’re often regarded as pests. But unlike many other types of pests pigeons are truly beautiful and graceful.

Virginia Stone

Some of my work begins with a figure drawing session in which I work from a live model. Drawing from life is like tight rope walking and that is likely why I find it so engaging. Everything is so immediate. No time to contemplate just the hand, the eye and the mind. I often take drawings and work them to have meaning and content. I love it when the drawing comes together complete with any after work. I also work with various media and other imagery. I have been making artworks since I was a child. I have taught art and art history and rely on these years of experiences to create the things I make. I love humor, and beauty and making commentary. All my work is some combination of one or all of these things. I hope you enjoy them.

Felicia Touhey

The work I am showing in the 2022 Member's Show are all collages that have been assembled from prints I have made in the past. Sometimes a print is not quite right as a finished piece. When this happens I put them in my "collage" pile. Eventually, I look at them again and begin to cut and reassemble them into a new piece. I find that when I start to deconstruct and reconstruct I see the shapes, patterns and textures of the prints in a new way. It is a very meditative process for me that leads to new ways of thinking about my work.
